What if those challenging behaviors in your classroom weren’t problems to stop, but messages waiting to be understood? These behaviors often give us clues about children’s sensory needs, especially those linked to proprioception, the body’s sense of movement, position, and pressure. In this interactive session, we’ll explore what proprioception is, why it matters for young children, and how it influences behavior and learning. Grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), this session highlights practical strategies teachers can use- including integrating multisensory experiences into daily routines and curriculum- to proactively meet sensory needs and foster engagement for every child. In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, research has shown a spike in staff turnover and retention (Sandstrom, Kuhns & Drukker, 2023). The turnover reasons are complex and multifaceted with research to support psychological distress and poor mental health, difficulties forming relationships with parents, mental health problems with male children and the challenging behaviors that can accompany those problems, and both individual determinants, such as social capital and health, and service-related determinants, such as lack of focus on staff well-being and poor professional training availability (Bang et al., 2021; Browne et al., 2021; Ng et al., 2023).
